Background: Previous reports have suggested that most cases of homonymous hemianopia (HH) are caused by occipital stroke. However, these reports have not always been supported by brain imaging. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of all patients seen in our unit between 1989 and 2004 who had HH documented by formal perimetry or confrontation visual fields and had undergone brain imaging. This is called hemianopia. Central vision loss is when the centre of your visual field is affected.

The most common cause of this type of vision loss is stroke. However, any disorder that affects the brain—including tumors, inflammation, and injuries--can be a cause. It is estimated that 70% of the injuries leading to hemianopsias are due to an obstruction (blockage) of the blood supply (stroke). Hemianopia, sometimes called hemianopsia, is partial blindness or a loss of sight in half of your visual field.
It may mean that you can’t see anything at all, or that you can only see things on the edge of where you are looking, not in the centre.
