For two decades, parents of children with symptoms of mental PANS is an acronym for Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome. PANDAS stands for Pediatric Autoimmune Disorders Associated with Strep. In both cases, infections cause inflammation in the brain, resulting in behavioral changes.
